Our experience with both companies:

Avis: the fastest way to rent a car at a reasonable price. The advantage of Avis is that the prices on the .com website are not that different than on the local (for us the .be) website. Their parkings are always well indicated, easy to find and close to airports or major locations. Disadvantage: they are not flexible (in pick-up/drop-off location, reserving a specific car). Hertz: the big advantage of this company is flexibility. If you like to do a one-way journey, between different states, reserve a specific car, Hertz is your company. Where Avis refused to rent us a car (pick-up in Denver, drop-off in Las Vegas), for Hertz this wasn’t a problem at all. Disadvantage is the price difference between the .com and local websites and the locations of their parkings. We needed to drop –off our car at a hotel, but it was really poorly indicated, we had to take a shuttle between parking and airport. Go to their website:
